Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Purab, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. In 2026 it falls on Tuesday 24 November, on the full moon (Kartik Purnima).
Why is Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrated?
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. He taught that there is one God, that all people are equal, and that we should live honestly, share with others and remember God. His three main teachings are Naam Japna (remembering God), Kirat Karni (earning an honest living) and Vand Chakna (sharing with those in need).
How it is celebrated
- Akhand Path – a 48-hour non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib in the days before.
- Prabhat Pheri – early-morning processions singing hymns.
- Nagar Kirtan – a street procession led by the Panj Pyare.
- Langar – a free community meal open to everyone, whatever their background.
- Gurdwaras are lit up with lights and diyas in the evening.
Melbourne’s gurdwaras hold kirtan and langar for Gurpurab, and everyone is welcome.
What to wear to the gurdwara for Gurpurab
- Cover your head – a dupatta or scarf for women, a turban, patka or scarf for men and boys.
- Women – a modest salwar suit or sharara set with a dupatta is the most comfortable for sitting on the floor. See our women’s suits.
- Men – a simple kurta pajama in white, cream or a soft colour.
- Kids – comfortable cotton outfits like our boys’ kurta pajama and girls’ sets.
- You will remove your shoes inside, so wear easy slip-on footwear.
