Holi 2027: Date, Why It Is Celebrated and What to Wear

Holi, the festival of colours, is one of the happiest Indian festivals. In 2027 Holi falls on Monday 22 March, with Holika Dahan (the bonfire) the evening before. Many Melbourne communities hold their Holi parties on the nearest weekend.

    Why is Holi celebrated?

Holi celebrates good over evil and the arrival of spring in India. The main story is about Prahlad, a young devotee of Lord Vishnu. His father, the demon king Hiranyakashipu, wanted him killed, and his aunt Holika sat with Prahlad in a fire, believing she could not be burned. Holika burned and Prahlad was saved. That is why a bonfire, Holika Dahan, is lit the night before Holi.

Holi is also linked to Lord Krishna, who playfully coloured Radha’s face – so the throwing of colours celebrates love and friendship too.

    How Holi is celebrated

    • Throwing gulal (coloured powder) and coloured water at friends and family.
    • Music, dancing and sweets like gujiya, plus thandai to drink.
    • Visiting neighbours and forgiving old arguments – a fresh start.

    What to wear for Holi

    • White is the tradition – it shows off the colours. A simple white or cream cotton kurti or kurta pajama is perfect.
    • Choose cotton – it is cool in March and washes easily.
    • Kids look great in white or light cotton sets – see our boys’ and girls’ outfits.
    • Keep your good silk for the evening get-together, not the colour play.
    • Rub coconut oil on skin and hair before playing so the colour washes off easily.
