A ready-to-wear saree has the pleats and pallu already stitched in. Put on your petticoat and blouse, wrap the skirt section and fasten it at the waist, then pin the pallu at your shoulder. It takes about two minutes.
Love the look of a saree but dread the draping? You are not alone. A traditional saree is about 5.5 metres of fabric, and getting the pleats right takes practice. A ready-to-wear saree (also called a pre-draped or pre-stitched saree) solves that. The pleats and pallu are already stitched in place, so you can be dressed in a couple of minutes.
What is a ready-to-wear saree?
It looks exactly like a draped saree once it is on. The difference is in the construction: the front pleats are sewn into a skirt-style base with a waist fastening, and the pallu (the part that goes over your shoulder) is pre-set. Most come with a matching blouse or blouse piece.
They are a great choice if you are new to sarees, short on time, or going to a long event where you want to move, sit and dance without worrying about pleats coming loose.
How to put it on, step by step
- Put on your blouse and a fitted slip or leggings. A smooth layer underneath helps the saree sit nicely.
- Wear your heels now. Saree length depends on your footwear, so put shoes on before you check the hem.
- Step into the pleated section and fasten it at the waist, with the pleats at the front, slightly to the left.
- Bring the pallu around your back and over your left shoulder.
- Pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder with a small safety pin so it stays in place.
- Check the hem just touches the top of your shoes. That’s it.
Tips for the best fit
- Blouse fit matters most. A well-fitted blouse makes any saree look polished. Tell us your bust and waist size and we will check the blouse for you.
- Choose fabric for the event. Chinon and crepe are light and flowy for parties. Organza looks airy and elegant for evening functions. Embellished borders are great for weddings and receptions.
- Melbourne weather tip: evenings can turn cold quickly. A light shawl or a saree with a stitched jacket keeps you warm and still looks festive.
- Keep a couple of safety pins in your bag, just in case.
