Kids’ Indian Outfits for School Cultural Days and Harmony Day

The note comes home from school: “Wear your cultural dress on Friday.” If you’re looking for kids’ Indian outfits for a school cultural day, Harmony Day or a multicultural event, this guide will help you choose something your child will be comfortable in all day. These days are a lovely way for kids to share where their family comes from, and they’re always so proud to show off their outfits.

Kids’ Indian outfits for school: think about the day first

A wedding outfit and a school outfit have very different jobs. At school, your child will be sitting on the floor, running at recess, eating lunch and maybe performing on stage. Keep these in mind:

  • Comfort comes first. Soft fabrics and a good lining stop scratching and itching.
  • Easy toilet trips. Younger kids need outfits they can manage on their own. Elastic waists are a big help.
  • Safe lengths. Skirts and pants should sit above the ankle so they don’t trip on stairs or play equipment.
  • Not too precious. There may be paint, food or grass stains. Keep the heaviest silk for family functions.
  • Layers for the weather. Melbourne mornings can be cold, so plan for a cardigan or jacket over the top.

Outfit ideas for boys

A kurta pajama is the easiest and most popular choice for boys. It’s comfortable, looks smart, and works for any age.

  • Cotton kurta pajama: soft and breathable, great for a full school day.
  • Silk kurta pajama: a little dressier, nice for a school concert or performance.
  • Add a small jacket or waistcoat over the kurta for a sharper look.
  • Wear normal school shoes or simple sandals, depending on school rules.

Our boys’ kurta pajama sets come in both silk and cotton, starting from $40. You can also see the full range under kids’ kurta pajama.

Outfit ideas for girls

Girls have lots of options, from simple to sparkly.

  • Lehenga set: the twirly skirt is always a favourite, especially for dance performances.
  • Anarkali or long frock: one piece, so it’s easy to put on, and it looks pretty.
  • Kurti with leggings or palazzo: the most practical choice for a full day of school.
  • Salwar suit: comfortable and classic, with a dupatta you can pin in place or leave at home.

Have a look at our girls’ outfits for ideas. For younger girls, choose outfits without small loose beads, and pin or skip the dupatta so it doesn’t get caught.

Harmony Day and multicultural events

Harmony Week is celebrated in Australian schools and communities each year, and many kids wear clothing that reflects their cultural background. Orange is the colour of Harmony Day, so some families like to add a touch of orange, like a dupatta, a kurta or a few bangles.

If your school is holding a multicultural concert or parade, think about how the outfit will look on stage. Bright colours like red, yellow, orange, royal blue and green show up well from a distance and in photos.

Don’t stress if your child doesn’t want to wear the full outfit all day. A kurta over jeans, or a kurti with leggings, still shares a bit of culture and keeps them comfortable.

Getting the size right

Kids’ sizing varies a lot between brands, and children grow fast. A few tips:

  • Measure their height, chest and waist before you shop.
  • If they’re between sizes, go up one. Sleeves and hems can be turned up for now.
  • Check our size guide, or send us your child’s measurements.

Buying a slightly bigger size also means the outfit will likely last through Diwali and Eid as well. For festival ideas, see our article on Diwali outfit ideas for kids.
