Dev Uthani Ekadashi (also called Prabodhini Ekadashi) and Tulsi Vivah fall on Saturday 21 November 2026 in Australia (Friday 20 November in India). It’s the day Lord Vishnu is believed to wake after four months of rest – and it marks the start of the Hindu wedding season.
What is Tulsi Vivah?
Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial wedding of the sacred Tulsi (holy basil) plant to Lord Vishnu, often in his Shaligram form. Families decorate the Tulsi plant like a bride, with a red chunri, bangles and flowers, and perform a small wedding puja at home or at the temple. After this day, weddings, engagements and griha pravesh ceremonies begin again.
How families celebrate in Melbourne
- A fast on Ekadashi, broken the next morning.
- Decorating the Tulsi plant with a mandap of sugarcane, flowers and diyas.
- Evening puja and aarti at home, or at Melbourne temples.
- Sharing prasad and sweets with family and neighbours.
What to wear for Tulsi Vivah
- Women: a red, yellow or green silk saree (Diwali Special 1 for $90, 2 for $130), or a festive suit (1 for $45, 2 for $60).
- Men: a silk or cotton kurta pyjama – cotton from $75, silk $80.
- Kids: boys’ kurta pyjama 1 for $40, 2 for $60, and girls’ ethnic wear 1 for $65, 2 for $80.
