Brocade Silk kurta pajama

Men’s Kurta Pajama Guide: Silk, Cotton or Chikankari?

A kurta pajama is the easiest way for men to dress for Indian festivals and weddings. But with so many fabrics and styles, it can be hard to know which one to pick. Here is a quick guide.

Silk and brocade silk

Silk has a smooth sheen and looks smart and festive. Brocade silk has a woven pattern, often with gold thread, and is the dressiest option. Great for wedding ceremonies, receptions and Diwali parties.

Chikankari

Chikankari is fine, hand-style embroidery from Lucknow, usually on cotton or cotton silk. It looks elegant but is lighter and cooler than silk, which makes it perfect for daytime events, pujas, haldi and mehndi, and warm Melbourne summer days.

Cotton

Cotton kurta pajamas are the most comfortable and the easiest to care for. Ideal for pujas, temple visits, family gatherings and long days.

Choosing a colour

  • Weddings: rich colours like maroon, navy, emerald or off-white with gold.
  • Haldi and mehndi: yellow, mustard, green or pastels.
  • Diwali: anything festive – bright colours look great in photos with the lights.
  • Pujas: white, cream or light pastels.

Getting the fit right

  • The kurta should sit around the knee and not be tight across the chest or shoulders.
  • Sleeves should end at the wrist bone.
  • If you are between sizes, go up a size for comfort.
