Haldi and mehndi are the most colourful, relaxed days of an Indian wedding. You will be sitting on the floor, dancing, and maybe getting turmeric on your clothes – so comfort matters as much as looks. Here is what works well for Melbourne weddings.
Colours that work
For haldi, yellow, mustard, orange and white are the classic picks. For mehndi, go for greens, pinks, teal and multi-colour prints. Avoid your best silk at the haldi – turmeric stains.
For women
- Sharara or gharara sets – flowy, easy to sit and dance in, and look great in photos.
- Kurti with palazzo – the comfiest option if you are helping with the function.
- Ready-to-wear saree – the saree look in two minutes, with no pinning. See our guide on how to wear a ready-to-wear saree.
- Light lehenga – for the bride’s sisters and close family.
Browse women’s ethnic wear.
For men
A cotton or chikankari kurta pajama in yellow, white or pastel is perfect. Silk is better saved for the wedding day. See men’s kurta pajama.
For kids
Kids need soft cotton they can run around in. Our organic cotton girls sharara and dhoti sets (from 6 months) and boys kurta pajama (ages 1–10) are made for long, busy days.
Quick tips
- Pick one colour theme for the whole family – it looks great in group photos.
- Choose flat or low sandals – you will be on your feet and on the floor.
- Bring a light dupatta or shawl for Melbourne’s cooler evenings.
